Description:
Today’s global teams with people working virtually around the world, need to achieve their goals while leveraging the sources of creativity, speed, and cost that come with differences in culture and location.

This course identifies the challenges and best practices of world class engineering, sales, and research teams. At each phase of team development, participants learn critical management and communication processes to build trust and effectiveness. Examples will be drawn from team members of Asia, Europe and the Americas (countries customized based on client requirements.

Goals:

  • Identify the challenges and success factors of global teams.
  • Determine how to successfully build the processes and communication required at each phase of team development across cultural and geographic differences to succeed.

Outline:

  • Global Team Assessment: Participants (or intact team) assess their current global team practices to benchmark themselves and identify learning objectives.
     
  • Building Global Teams: Identify each phase of team formation. Launch the team by establishing purpose, forming relationships and roles. Learn how different cultures approach inclusion, and how to build a foundation for trust and collaboration. Identify different beliefs about the role of “boss” or team leader. Discuss gaps formed by assumptions, differences, or misunderstandings and how to bridge these.
     
  • Media Choices for Communicating Across Cultures: Gain important criteria for selecting and optimizing online communication, email, teleconferences or face-to-face meetings for virtual coworkers. Learn techniques to modify for cultural styles, fluency abilities, and communication needs (presentation, feedback, meetings, etc.) to best convey the message with optimal understanding while avoiding embarrassment or confusion.
     
  • Conflict Resolution: Inevitably there arise disagreements and conflicts among team members. Identify different cultural approaches to disagreement and conflict, strategies to resolve these and how to move the team forward.
     
  • Trust-building: Participants learn criteria of many teams and cultures for trusting others, and survey their own criteria to illuminate their team members on one various perspectives.
     
  • Achieving Results while Managing Differences Participants: Reflect on what they’ve learned through the day, review best practices from research and experience, and plan their personal action plan to achieve their individual and team goals. Intact teams can contract for new team processes they will take from the course into their work practices.
