Transition to Management

Becoming a New Manager

"The Next Generation Management Development courses have helped me communicate more effectively with my peers and teammates. By utilizing effective communication techniques such as clarifying and confirming, and asking open ended questions, I have been able to clarify and understand information in situations where I would have otherwise asked limited questions and made false assumptions."
Robert Breckner | Engineering Manager | International Game Technology

Description:
Too often, new managers are promoted into management positions without the knowledge, skills, or tools required to successfully manage or lead a team.

In fact, according to a recent management study, only 25% of employees say that their companies are good at helping individuals transition into their first managerial roles. We know that poor management transitions create poor new managers.  We also know that the majority of new managers who are left on their own to navigate their new role create significant performance, engagement, retention, and employee relations problems.

  • What does becoming a new manager involve?

  • What skills are needed to be a good new manager?

  • What will others expect of you as a new manager?

These are all natural questions for anyone who has recently been promoted or desires a management position.

Transition to Management is a hands-on, interactive workshop that introduces new managers or aspiring new managers to the essential management skills necessary to successfully transition into a management role.  Core management modules include understanding the role of a manager, communicating “up and down,” coaching, performance management, planning, and allocating resources.

Learning Objectives:
Within the context of your organization, participants:

  1. Define the role of a manager
  2. Examine the discipline of management
  3. Create a personalized approach for coaching employees
  4. Practice the art of performance management
  5. Strengthen their ability to plan and allocate resources
  6. Identify their personal communication style (and that of others) to better influence outcomes and drive results

All exercises are customized using examples and case studies specific to your organization.

Learning Outcomes:
After completing the workshop, new managers are equipped to:

  1. Develop a team-based action plan that is aligned with departmental and organizational goals
  2. Design and provide actionable objectives

  1. Pre-workshop assessment
  2. One- or two-day leader-led workshop
  3. Two-hour post-workshop assessment and learning reinforcement in a facilitated online session
  4. Two-hour “tune-up” course in a facilitated online session – 4 to 6 weeks after the workshop
