Accurate Grammar for Speaking and Writing

Goal
Many foreign-born professionals know the principal rules of English grammar, but make errors in simple and complex syntax. In this course, participants review troublesome grammar rules and complex sentence structure, learn to monitor their speech and writing for persistent errors, and apply correct structures in verbal and written contexts.

Objectives

  • Pinpoint persistent individual errors through an initial assessment and follow-up transcriptions of real speech
  • Develop monitoring techniques to correct errors immediately
  • Monitor speech for correct word endings (plurals and verb forms)
  • Review prepositions
  • Become more aware of the practical application of grammar in everyday speech and writing
  • Improve grammatical accuracy through monitoring techniques
  • Speak and write English with more confidence
  • Use accurate grammar to express yourself more clearly

Methodology

Pre-course and post-course evaluation; group, paired, and individual exercises; discussion, verbal and written exercises, speech transcription, composition, error analysis. Enrollment is limited to 4 - 14 participants to increase coaching and personal interaction.

Scheduling

This 30-hour training program is offered in one of the following formats:

  • 1 2.5-hour session per week for 12 weeks 
  • 1 3-hour session per week for 10 weeks

What You Learn

General

  • Subject-verb agreement
  • Plurals
  • Past tense endings  

Articles (a, an, the)

  • Countable and uncountable nouns (e.g., types is countable; information is uncountable)
  • Definitions
  • First versus second mention
  • The effect of modification on article choice
  • The generic article Rhythm and Linking
  • Practice the rhythm of American English with vowel lengthening
  • Apply rules for linking words to create smoother-sounding statements and questions

Complex Verb Structures

  • Identify word, phrase and sentence stress
  • Diagram sentence and question intonation patterns
  • Learn how intonation changes communicate different messages and attitudes

Complex Sentences

  • Using adverbial clauses to indicate relationships between ideas
  • The tense structure and word order of noun clauses
  • Adjective clauses Prepositional Phrases
  • Two-word verbs
  • Phrasal adjectives

Target Audience

Non-native speakers of English.
