Idioms at Work
Goal
Participants improve understanding of workplace discussions and conversation by learning common idioms, slang and workplace vocabulary.
Objectives
- Understand idioms in spoken English
- Study the relationship of sports to American business vocabulary
- Learn to use idiom reference dictionaries
- Monitor speech for smooth, idiomatic conversation
- Identify and discuss unfamiliar idioms and vocabulary heard on the job
- Have increased understanding of American humor in meetings
Methodology
Written and verbal exercises, role plays, discussion and impromptu speaking exercises. Enrollment is limited to 4 - 12 people per class.
Our experienced ESL facilitators have
degrees and certificates in English, Linguistics, Speech Pathology,
Education, Business and Foreign Languages. They draw from an
extensive pool of resources to design effective training that meets
your employees' needs.

What You Learn
General
- Learn to pay attention to unfamiliar idioms at work
- Learn specialized idioms for technical, business, and financial applications
- Acquire techniques for ongoing vocabulary building
- Learn the critical role that military and sports play in generating workplace idioms
Understanding
- Identify and discuss unfamiliar idioms and vocabulary heard on the job
- Interpret shades of meaning in idioms by listening to tone of voice and interpreting context
- Practice asking co-workers for meanings
Practicing
- Practice learning idioms using advertisements, articles and headlines
- Learn and apply appropriate phrasing for common social situations
- Use idioms to express various emotions
Non-native speakers of English.
