Intensive Pronunciation Workshop
Goal
This accent reduction workshop is for foreign-born professionals who want a fast-paced, intensive overview of the "trouble
spots" of American pronunciation. Participants will reduce errors in pronunciation and speak more clearly.
Objectives
- Identify and practice the sounds most frequently mispronounced by non-native speakers (accent reduction)
- Control rate of speech
- Use native speakers' vowel length, word stress, and rhythm patterns
- Expand jaw movement to enunciate clearly
- Manipulate voicing and pitch to imitate American sounds
- Learn techniques for continued self-improvement
Methodology
Group, paired, and individual exercises; daily practice with Intensive Pronunciation manual and audiotapes or CDs. Enrollment is limited to 4 - 12 persons per class.
Our experienced ESL facilitators have
degrees and certificates in English, Linguistics, Speech Pathology,
Education, Business and Foreign Languages. They draw from an
extensive pool of resources to design effective training that meets
your employees' needs.
Scheduling
This 15-hour training program is offered in two formats:
- 2-day workshop
- 4 half-day sessions
What You Learn
Articulation
- Learn and practice the correct mouth and tongue positions for accurate sound production
- Improve sound discrimination through focused listening
- Practice vowel sounds and vowel length for better volume and clarity
- Articulate consonant sounds to improve diction
- Brainstorm high-frequency workplace vocabulary which uses the sounds covered in the workshop
- Practice pronunciation of word endings that have grammatical significance to listeners
- Target areas of particular difficulty for individual review and practice
Word Stress, Rhythm, Intonation and Linking
- Become aware of the underlying rhythm of American English
- Identify and reproduce word, phrase, and sentence stress
- Practice a range of common intonation patterns, from basic statements and questions to more emphatic speech
- Apply rules for linking words to create smoother-sounding statements and questions
Non-native speakers of English.
