Workshop Objectives

- Distinguish different levels of communication, ranging from colloquial to formal
- Learn effective ways to respond to other people's speech
- State ideas more clearly and persuasively
- Use a broader vocabulary to capture subtle nuances of meaning
- Respond to others, demonstrating respect and openness
- Speak your mind with greater confidence
Methodology
Brainstorming, discussions, readings, role plays and impromptu speaking exercises. Enrollment is limited to 6 - 12 people per class.

What You Learn
Presenting Information
- Learn how to organize your thoughts to maximize effectiveness when giving opinions, expressing original ideas, and conveying information
- Practice speaking on different topics using American-style organization
- Identify the appropriate amount of detail and background information to support main ideas
Vocabulary and Idioms
- Learn new vocabulary to express ideas more precisely
- Use appropriate phrases to convey your intent and connect with your listeners
- Analyze word choice to understand the underlying meaning of statements
- Explore strategies for on-going vocabulary enrichment
Relating to Others
- Respond appropriately to others to facilitate productive discussions
- Learn to speak tactfully about sensitive issues
- Analyze how ideas are presented by speakers in a variety of workplace situations
- Receive feedback regarding the effectiveness of statements and how they are perceived by others
