Speaking Under Pressure
Goal
Practice exercising authority in difficult situations, techniques for relaxation and concentration, and appropriate language for dealing with pressured circumstances.
Objectives
- Develop options for dealing with pressured situations you typically encounter
- Practice voice projection, eye contact, posture, and appropriate gestures
- Learn techniques for listening concentration and retention
- Learn strategies for answering questions on your feet
- Discover what you can control in pressured situations and what you cannot control
- Become aware of how others perceive you
- Develop confidence in dealing with pressure situations on-the-job
- Communicate with calm and clarity in pressured situations
Methodology
Videotaped role plays and critiques, discussion, relaxation exercises, impromptu speaking exercises. Enrollment is limited to 6 - 12 participants.

What You Learn
Basics
- Identify pressured situations at work
- Become aware of the interplay of body, mind, and emotions when in pressure situations
- Learn techniques for previewing and practicing responses to pressure situations
Developing Commitment, Confidence and Control in Pressure Situations
- Develop a new image of yourself in pressure situations
- Discover how commitment can determine your response
- Identify what you can and cannot control in pressure situations
- Learn to set realistic goals for dealing with pressure situations
- Identify thoughts that can help you and those that can hinder you
Focusing
- Learn to observe others objectively while communicating
- Practice concentrating and retaining important information when under pressure
- Practice focusing attention with various distractions occurring simultaneously
Projecting Confidence
- Use eye contact, posture, and gestures to your advantage
- Control volume, voice quality, speed and pacing
Interacting and Responding
- Learn a four-step technique for answering questions on-the-spot
- Learn a six-step technique for handling hostile questions
Practice
- "Buying time" before responding
- Rephrasing for clear understanding
- Interrupting to make your point heard
